Amar was holding something back. There was more to the story. Divya could tell.
Whatever. It was no longer her problem. In fact, it had never been her problem to begin with. Or so she told herself.
Her heart thudded in her chest and all she wanted to do was hold Amar and tell him it would be all right. Instead, she watched while his sister comforted him. As far as the thudding in her chest and the pit in her stomach, there was nothing for it.
Her phone rang, Nikhil was closest, so he grabbed it, glancing at it as he handed it to her. He froze as he saw the screen, looking at her in shock. Anita did not miss his expression.
âWhat?â She turned to Divya. âWho is it?â
Divya, for once, had nothing to say. Nikhil shook his head.
Anita turned back to him. âNicky, who is calling Divya that made you look at her like that?â
Nikhil couldnât stop looking at her, his mouth pressed in a line, his eyes filled with accusation. She flicked her gaze away from him. She couldnât face the accusation in his eyes. No matter how deserved.
âItâs Ranjit,â Divya finally said. All eyes turned to her, but the only ones she was paying attention to were the darkest brown of them all. The only ones that mattered. Amarâs.
He narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. âWhy is Ranjit calling you?â
Divya swallowed as heat rose to her face. âHe needs a pastry chef for a party.â She jutted her chin out toward Amar, even as anger and betrayal filled his eyes. If looks could kill, as they say.
âYouâre working with Ranjit?â Amarâs lips barely moved as he spoke. âYou said you werenât going to call him back.â
âAnd I didnât, until you left. Until we decided not to work together. My best option is to pair with caterers. Even you said that,â Divya spat out.
âBut this is Ranjit.â Amar said the manâs name like it was a four-letter word.
âI need income. My parents are downsizing. Theyâre going to sell the house, so Iâm getting my own place. Every referral we have wants the both of us, even whatever we get from this wedding. Since we clearly cannot work together, I figured Iâd work a couple of parties with Ranjit to make some money. I have to look out for myself.â
âBut Divââ Anita was shaking her head at her.
âDonât but Div, me!â She turned on her friend, tears spilling from her eyes. âI should have known that when push came to shove, youâd side with your brother.â
âNo. Thatâs notââ Anita reached for her friend. âThere has to be another catererââ
Divya stepped out of her reach. âNot with Ranjitâs connections.â She couldnât tear her gaze from Amar. The look of hurt and betrayal on his face would haunt her forever.
âYou could have worked with anyone. But you chose Ranjit.â His tone was steel, but she heard the shock beneath.
âNo. I chose you.â Divya grabbed her phone. âBut you wonât work with me.
